Syn: shingles. A skin eruption that is manifest as painful inflammatory or vesicular lesions in a particular dermatome. Herpes zoster often occurs in older people or those with impaired immunity, due to reactivation of varicella virus that has been dormant since childhood infection. The neuralgic pain and related sleeplessness and insomnia can persist for many months, even years. See also genital herpes.
