(Britten: Albert Herring). Mez. Owner of the local greengrocer's, mother of Albert whom she keeps under her thumb. She insists her son accepts the position of May King as there is a 25 sovereign prize attached to it. When Albert goes missing, Mrs Herring is truly distressed—he is, after all, her only son and, thinking he is dead, she genuinely mourns him. Once he reappears, she rapidly reverts to being the domineering mother, and is totally nonplussed when her son makes it clear that he is no longer prepared to accept this kind of treatment. Aria: There's one in a frame. Created (1947) by Betsy de la Porte.
