theologian. In 1879 he became professor of systematic theology at Marburg. Though he regarded the Gospels as in some sense the record of a historical personality, he insisted that the Church should teach only those facts about Christ which will act upon human beings, e.g. His moral teaching, as distinguished from His Virgin Birth.
