A city in the north of Moab which changed hands several times; captured by the Israelites, it was occupied by the tribe Reuben (Num. 32: 37) but later by Levites (Josh. 21: 1–3, 39). It returned to the Moabites in the 9th cent. bce (Isa. 15: 4); known as Esbus in the NT era.
