Referring to the appearance of chromosomes or chromosomal regions that have a coiling cycle out of phase with the rest of the genome. Positively heteropycnotic segments are more tightly coiled and negatively heteropycnotic segments are more loosely coiled than the rest of the chromosomal complement. See allocycly, isopycnotic.
