(1825–99) army officer born at Blackheath, Chesterfield County, Virginia. Heth had commendably filled several posts before resigning his commission to fight for the Confederacy. At Chancellorsville (1863) he successfully assumed leadership of the division when the commander was wounded, but a series of repeated blunders at Gettysburg (1863), where Heth commanded his own division, tarnished his reputation.
