Quick Reference

(c.1745–1829), Scottish-born Presbyterian clergyman, emigrated to South Carolina (1763), where he remained as a Loyalist until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. He wrote An Historical Account of the Rise and Progress of the Colonies of South Carolina and Georgia (2 vols., 1779), interspersing social and natural history with a political narrative. David Ramsay, who declared that Hewat's Tory bias rendered untrustworthy the account of the Revolutionary background, used the rest of the history as a source of his own work.
