Quick Reference

A verse of six metrical feet, which in the Greek form consists of five dactyls and a trochee or spondee; for any of the dactyls a spondee may be substituted, except in the fifth foot, where a spondee is rare. It is not frequently used in English, but has sometimes been employed, as in Clough's The Bothie of Tober‐na‐Vuolich, to considerable effect. See Metre.
