A genus of trees and shrubs whose showy flowers have a prominent stamen tube. They are bird-pollinated. Several are widely cultivated, especially H. rosa-sinensis. Okra is the mucilaginous young fruits of H. (Abelmoschus) esculentus. There are about 200 species, with a pantropical distribution.
