was the acknowledged leader of the first great generation of Anglo‐Saxon scholars which included the Elstobs and Wanley. The climax of his work was the Linguarum Veterum Septentrionalium Thesaurus (1703–5), a comparative grammar of Old English and the related Germanic tongues. Its examination of the manuscript sources of Anglo‐Saxon history had a deep influence upon the study of the whole Old English past.
