Stoic of the time of Hadrian (ad 117–38) wrote Elements of Ethics and other ethical works, important for theory of oikeiosis or affiliation, a form of self-perception and self-love. He also uses the image later made famous by the twentieth-century moral philosopher Peter Singer, of expanding concentric circles as an analogy to the expansion of the range of proper concern for others.
