An award at a higher level than a bachelor's or first degree. This includes master's degrees and doctorates. An applicant to study for a higher degree will normally be required to hold a good first degree at either first class or upper second class level for entry to a master's programme; and usually to have successfully completed a master's degree for entry to doctorate level. Higher degrees are awarded by universities and some other institutions of higher education.
