The national council in Wales of Universities UK, established in 1996 to represent the higher education sector in Wales. Membership includes all the heads of universities and higher education institutions in Wales, and the Welsh director of the Open University. HEW promotes and supports higher education in Wales, representing the interests of its members to the National Assembly, to Parliament, to political parties, and to European institutions and bodies, with whom it negotiates on behalf of Welsh higher education. It also provides an expert resource on all aspects of higher education to stakeholders, including Assembly Members and Welsh MPs, the Welsh and UK media, business leaders, and industrial entrepreneurs.
