High School of Performing Arts

Performing arts school. It was established in 1948 as part of New York's Metropolitan Vocational High School, becoming amalgamated with the High School of Music and Arts in 1961 and in 1984 amalgamated again with the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Arts and Performing Arts. The dance department highlights modern dance training alongside academic studies and it has produced many leading US dancers. Its teachers have included G. Shurr, Joffrey, A Hutchinson, and Malinka. The school was showcased in the 1980 film Fame.
