high street

Quick Reference

A UK term that means the concentration of shopping outlets in the centre of a town, suburb, or city. High-street retailing has come under greater pressure as more and more major shopping centres move outside the city where they can have a larger-scale display of goods, wider choice, and better parking facilities. It also remains to be seen if Internet and teleshopping can displace the physical shopping habits of the majority of consumers. See also department store; retailing.
