Quick Reference

Pòtjoet Moehamat is one of the heroes of an epic poem of Aceh in northern Sumatra in Indonesia. The poem was transcribed from the oral form in the eighteenth century and is the legendary record of a civil war between Pòtjoet and his ally Bēntara Keumangan and Djeumalōj Alam, a king who claims descent from the prophet Muhammad. In fact, the dominant hero of the epic is not Pòtjoet but Bentara, whose death at the hands of the king stirs up the people to support the war and Pòtjoet Moehamat's cause.
