French dancer. He studied at Paris Opera Ballet School and graduated into the company in 1980, becoming étoile in 1985 (he was promoted by Nureyev, unusually without having first been named premier danseur). A tall dancer with a handsome, elegant technique, he was particularly suited to the classical repertory but also created roles in many new works including Forsythe's In the middle somewhat elevated (1987). A regular partner of Guillem, both while she was at the Opera and abroad, he also guested with Alessandra Ferri in Italy, Kain in Canada, and Morishita in Vienna. He retired from the stage in 2007 to become ballet master at the Paris Opera.
