the founder of the anchoritic life in Palestine. He was converted to Christianity at Alexandria, and under the influence of St Antony retired for a short time to the Egyptian desert as a hermit. In 306 he returned to Palestine, where he lived a life of extreme asceticism near Gaza. Feast day, 21 Oct.
