Abbess of Whitby. Descended from the Northumbrian royal line, in 657 she founded a double monastery at Whitby; it grew in fame and influence. At the Synod of Whitby (664) she sided with St Colman in his defence of the Celtic customs. Feast day, 17 Nov.; 18 Nov. in the American BCP (1979); 19 Nov. in CW.
