Quick Reference

(1951– )

One of the highest‐profile American clothing companies from the 1980s onwards Tommy Hilfiger Inc. markets a range of personal Lifestyle products including menswear, women's wear, sportswear, children's wear, glasses, scents, and domestic furnishings. The beginning of Hilfiger's retail career in clothing was less than auspicious, his first outlet, The People's Store, going bankrupt in 1976. However, instead of buying in design as he had for The People's Store, Hilfiger began designing clothing for his other outlets. After moving to New York Tommy Hilfiger Inc. was founded in 1982, with Hilfiger serving as president until becoming director in 1992. Commencing with men's jeans and sportswear the multi‐million dollar Tommy Hilfiger brand has become popular across many products associated with self‐image and is embraced by a wide spectrum of consumers internationally. In 1995 the Council of Fashion Designers of America named Hilfiger as the Menswear Designer of the Year. In the same year he was honoured by the ‘From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’ Award at the first VHI Fashion and Music Awards.
