Ger. pianist, conductor, and composer. With Hummel, visited Beethoven on his deathbed, 1827. Lived in Paris 1828–35; first to play Beethoven's 5th pf. conc. in Paris. Cond., Leipzig Gewandhaus Orch. 1843–4 and held cond. posts in Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, and Cologne. Founded Cologne Cons., 1850, becoming dir. until 1884. Cond. of It. opera in Paris 1852–3. Wrote 6 operas; 2 oratorios; 3 syms.; 3 pf. concs.; vn. conc.; cantatas; chamber mus.; and pf. pieces.
