Better known as Umm Salama. Meccan aristocrat. Emigrated to Abyssinia with her first husband, who died of wounds sustained at the Battle of Uhud (625). Became a wife of the Prophet Muhammad (626). Reputedly intelligent, politically astute, active for women's rights in Medina. Acted as the Prophet's adviser during negotiations concerning the al-Hudaybiyya treaty with the Meccans (628).
