An enzyme (histidase, EC 4.3.1.3, 657 aa) that converts histidine into ammonia and urocanic acid. Mutations in the gene cause histidinaemia, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by increased levels of histidine and decreased levels of urocanic acid.
