A queen of the Amazons given in marriage to Theseus by Hercules, who had conquered her and taken away her girdle, the achievement being one of his 12 labours. She had a son by Theseus called Hippolytus. In another version she was slain by Hercules, and it was his sister Antiope that was the wife of Theseus. She and Theseus frame the action in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
