Paul Hoch

Quick Reference

A US-born radical activist, writer, and critic whose Rip Off the Big Game: The Exploitation of Sports by the Power Elite (1972) provided a provocative ‘historical materialist analysis of sports’, as Hoch himself put it. His critical sweep included sport's role in reproducing military might, monopoly capital, sexism, and racism. Presciently, he noted that the use of performance-enhancing drugs, which shrink the testes of big muscular male athletes, has the ironic outcome of producing ‘plastic Supermen with no balls’.
