Finnish mathematical statistician who spent most of his career in the United States. After schooling in Denmark and Germany, Hoeffding gained his PhD from U Berlin in 1940. In 1946 he moved to the United States and joined the staff at UNC, retiring in 1979. He was President of the IMS in 1969 and was its Wald Lecturer in 1967. He was elected to membership of the NAS in 1976.
