According to a theory in Gestalt psychology, a mental step in which one memory trace makes contact with another, such a step being required for the association of ideas to occur, as when the perception of bread elicits the associated idea of butter, a memory trace of bread having first to be activated and to make contact with a memory trace of butter before the association can occur. [Named after the Danish philosopher and psychologist Harald Höffding (1843–1931) who suggested it]
