New York City-born author, educated at Columbia, is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. His first book of poetry, An Armada of Thirty Whales (1954), was selected for the Yale Series of Younger Poets. Later volumes include A Little Geste (1960), Striking the Stones (1968), and Brotherly Love (1980), a long poem celebrating the city of Philadelphia. Hoffman has also written critical works on Stephen Crane (1957) and Poe (1972).
