(b Dwingeloo, 9 Nov. 1863; d The Hague, 14 Apr. 1930). Dutch art historian, author of the monumental catalogue Beschreibendes und kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten holländischen Maler des XVII Jahrhunderts (10 vols., 1907–28). An English edition of volumes i–viii appeared in 1908–27, entitled A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch Painters of the Seventeenth Century. Covering the work of 40 of the leading painters of the period, the catalogue has been superseded in some areas, but is still regarded as a major source of information and its numbering system is frequently referred to. Hofstede de Groot also published the first complete catalogue of Rembrandt's drawings (1906) and he wrote numerous articles for Thieme–Becker. With Bode and Bredius he ranks as one of the founders of the modern study of 17th-century Dutch art.
