archaeologist and authority on Near Eastern affairs. He was keeper of the Ashmolean Museum (1908–27). His publications include A Wandering Scholar in the Levant (1896) and The Life of C. M. Doughty (1928). One of his disciples at Oxford was T. E. Lawrence, who came very much under his influence.
