scholar and writer, brought up in Leeds and educated at Leeds University. He has held many academic and public appointments. His interest in literature, education, and communication was expressed in his influential work The Uses of Literacy (1957), which has been followed by many other works of literary criticism and sociology and three volumes of memoirs (1988, 1990, 1992).
