Quick Reference

(Jap.). One of three dhāraṇī or formulae recited daily by esoteric practitioners (see esoteric Buddhism) of the Shingon andTendai schools in Japan. It consists of 40 sentences, and is drawn from the I-ch'ieh ju-lai-hsin mi-mi ch'üan-shen she-li pao-ch'ieh-yin t'o-lo-ni ching (1022 in the Taishō canon) translated by Amoghavajra in 746. This formula is said to have the power to release beings caught in hell.heal the sick, and give fortune to the destitute.
