Bolivian painter, active mainly in Potosí, which was the biggest and wealthiest city in the Americas during that period because of the local silver deposits. He is regarded as the leading painter of his time in the Spanish colonies, but his work is undistinguished by European standards. It mixed various European influences, from Mannerism to Rococo, with certain Indian features.
