writer, published several novels, the best‐known of which is her last, South Riding (1936), set in Yorkshire, which is at once the story of enterprising headmistress Sarah Burton and a portrait of a whole community. Her other novels include Anderby Wold (1923), The Crowded Street (1924), The Land of Green Ginger (1927), and Mandoa, Mandoa! (1933). She was also a prolific journalist.
