Quick Reference

The Congregation of the Holy Ghost was founded in Paris in 1703 for the training of priests. After it had been given official approval in 1734, it became concerned with missionary work, particularly in the French colonies. In 1848, at the request of Pius IX, François Marie Paul Libermann merged it with his own Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, founded in 1841 for the evangelization of Black ex-slaves, and reorganized it. The Holy Ghost Fathers were pioneers of RC missionary work in E. and W. Africa.
