Literally, ‘the same arrangement’ (from the Greek homos, meaning ‘same’ and tasso, meaning ‘arrange’), a term proposed by T. H. Huxley (1825–95), in an address to the Geological Society of London (published in the Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London in 1862), to describe strata from different areas which contain similar lithologic or fossil successions but are not necessarily of the same age.
