A collection of 12 prescribed homilies, drawn up for the use of disaffected and unlearned clergy, was issued under the authority of Edward VI's Council in 1547. A ‘Second Book’ with 21 further homilies was issued under Elizabeth V, in its final form in 1571. The Homilies retain a measure of authority in view of the references to them in the Thirty-Nine Articles.
