Quick Reference

Appointed dean of Lincoln after the Restoration, he commissioned Christopher Wren to design the new cathedral library to which he bequeathed his large private collection. Among his books are many rare continental (especially Dutch) editions—the result of the seventeen years he spent in exile in the Netherlands during the Civil War and Interregnum.
