A protein (2496 aa) of the fused-type S100 family (see fused gene family); originally identified in mouse but human hornerin has been identified. Hornerin shares structural features, expression profiles, and intracellular localization with profilaggrin, but has a distinct function from that of filaggrin in cornification (keratinization) of epidermal cells.
