(1895–1985), British Army officer who served as a battalion commander in Montgomery's 3rd Division during the fighting which led to the fall of France in June 1940. He went on to become a highly successful corps commander under Montgomery in the Western Desert and North African campaigns. Before the Sicilian campaign he was severely wounded during an air raid but in August 1944 he was appointed to command 30th Corps of Dempsey's Second British Army which played a critical role in MARKET-GARDEN and in the battle for Germany.
