Portuguese-German dancer and choreographer. He studied with the Gulbenkian Ballet and in the US with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and on his return to Portugal directed Lisbon Dance Company, becoming founder director of the Frankfurt-based S.O.A.P. Dance Theatre in 1991. His works have been driven as much by ideas as pure dance, for example Object Constant (1994) which offers a witty deconstruction of the conventions of post-modern performance. He has also choreographed works for several other companies, including Gulbenkian Ballet (1997, 1999), Cullberg Ballet (1998), Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (1999), Phoenix Dance Theatre (2003), and Malmö Opera. After disbanding S.O.A.P. he created works for a company of dancers based in Munich, including Zeitraum (1999) then in 2000 returned to Portugal where he founded a multi-disciplinary arts centre The Space of Time as his base. He continues to work freelance and with his own dancers, his most recent works including Setup (2005) and Pure (2008).
