The leading English portrait miniaturist between c.1620 and c.1640 (from the death of Hilliard to the emergence of Samuel Cooper, Hoskins's nephew and pupil). His early work is a development of Hilliard's style. He later became a specialist in miniature versions of van Dyck's large-scale portraits, but his work often has a charm and originality of its own. His son, JohnHoskinsthe Younger (?c.1617–after 1693), was also a miniaturist.
