A telephone number that is accessible for emergencies or for standard information, e.g., about specific health problems, such as sexually transmitted diseases, suicidal thoughts, unwanted pregnancies. It is often a toll-free number. Examples include 911 (or 999) for police, fire, or ambulance and many Samaritan services and the like. See also help line.
