The process of waiting for some lengthy event to occur. It refers to the hourglass icon associated with the Windows operating system. This icon appears when a process occurs which is destined to take a long time. Hourglass mode is occasionally used in normal conversation to describe the state of someone who is not paying full attention to what is being said by another person: for example, ‘Ignore her, she's in hourglass mode.’ See also grey bar land.
