South African dancer, teacher, and pioneer of dance in S. Africa. She studied with Helen Webb and then moved to London where she studied ballet and mime with Craske and Karsavina and Spanish dancing with Elsa Brunelleschi. She toured with Pavlova's company and returned to S. Africa in 1930 where she founded the University of Cape Town School of Ballet in 1934. Its performing group became the University of Cape Town Ballet for which she choreographed many ballets. In 1965 it achieved fully professional status as the CAPAB Ballet (See Cape Town City Ballet). As teacher and director she nurtured many artists including Cranko, Poole, and Rodrigues. She retired from the company in 1969 and from the UCT School of Ballet in 1973.
