American novelist and friend of H. James. He was editor of the Atlantic Monthly (1871–81) and associate editor of Harper's Magazine (1886–91), to which periodicals he contributed many articles. His numerous romances include The Undiscovered Country (1880), The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885), Indian Summer (1886), and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890), which shows the effect of his political and critical moves towards socialism and realism. He also wrote works of travel, criticism, and reminiscence, and several dramas.
