Quick Reference

A wooded valley on the Gaṅgā, fifteen miles upstream from Hardwār in Uttaranchal (formerly in Uttar Pradesh). It marks the beginning of the route to the Himālayan pilgrimage sites, such as Kedārnāth and Badrīnāth. It has become a popular site for religious teachers and their associated āśrams.
