A program which provides a wealth of facilities for developing Web pages. The most sophisticated provide facilities for the automatic insertion of tags, hyperlinks, and graphic images, the checking of HTML for adherence to a particular browser, the previewing of a page that has been constructed, the construction of animations, the copying of Web pages to a Web server using the File Transfer Protocol, the laying out of text on a page using precise positioning, and the formatting of text. The aim of an HTML editor is to isolate the user from the concrete details of the Hypertext Markup Language. HTML editors are sometimes known as HTML authors.
