A tag is a device which notifies a browser that some formatting of a Web page is required at the point where the tag has been inserted; for example, the <P> tag tells the browser to insert a new paragraph and the <TABLE> tag informs the browser that formatting associated with a table is about to start. In HTML tags are delineated by the < and > brackets. Many tags are associated with end tags; for example, the tag <TABLE> which introduces a table is associated with </TABLE> which marks the end of the table. There are other uses for tags over and above formatting: see, for example, metatag. See also broket.
