(1914–1994) Margarita R. Huantes was a social worker and an adult educator. She was a pioneer in the adult literacy movement. As founder and first executive director of the San Antonio Literacy Council, she worked tirelessly to combat adult illiteracy for more than three decades. Since its founding in 1960, the San Antonio Literacy Council has taught more than 60,000 adults to read and write.
